My Xinjiang trip in May 2021

by Juergen Kurz, May 2021

I have known Xinjiang for around 15 years. My first trip to Xinjiang I did in May 2006. We made a stopover in Lanzhou, visited the capital of the Gansu Province for one day and then went on to Urumqi by train. At that time this journey took about 24 hours. Today you can do for around 70 euros the whole distance (around 1900 km) in less than 11 hours with the Chinese High Speed Train. Shortly before rolling into the train station in Urumqi, we passed 2006 a wind farm, which was huge for the time, like I have never seen before at that time.

Meanwhile I am married since 10 years with my girlfriend, she showed me at that time her hometown Shihezi in Xinjiang for the first time. Since then I have been 8 times in the XUAR (Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region)

15 years later, I visited Xinjiang again in May 2021 after I haven't been there for about 5 years.

With this trip in 2021, I wanted to see if “my Xinjiang” would continue to be this colorful, cosmopolitan province that I had got to know in previous years. I knew in the past happened also horrible things there, similar as in Afghanistan, described in the beautiful book from Khaled Hosseini, "The Kite Runner"

This time I didn't just want to, like on all of my other visits before, travel as a normal tourist or visitor through the province. I wanted to see also schools, factories, farmers, villages and also visit mosques and talk to police and administrations to get a picture of the current situation in Xinjiang. Over the past years there has been too much negative reports written about this beautiful multi-ethnic province in western medias, although most reporters have not visited this province for years, so that I saw it as necessary to get a picture by myself on site.

I am one of the few non-Chinese people who where lucky to live in China during the CoVid-19 pandemic and to be able to travel there unhindered.

And there was another special feature that ultimately led to the Xinjiang government welcomed me with open arms and sent out a strong signal of friendship with Germany:

As a founding member of today's Bündnis 90 / DIE GRÜNEN party I have a unique position in the eyes of the Chinese. I am probably the only GREEN party member who has lived in China for 18 years and I am lucky enough to observe China from within.

With this report of my trip I deliver to the public audition in Germany and Europe my observations about Xinjiang today in the hope that in the future in the political discussion more Facts as prejudice will play a role.

I would be happy if my Xinjiang trip will help to improve the German / Chinese friendship.

Parallel to my trip, the Australian Jerry Gray, who too for about as long as I've lived in China, has published an article about China's successful poverty reduction program, which is an impressive confirms with his words what I have seen in the past 18 years in China and what I on the Xinjiang trip experienced!
